Jalapeño Popper Wontons

Here’s how to get the savory goodness of a jalapeño popper without using a deep fryer: break out some wonton wrappers and a mini muffin tin. We’re not kidding. Once you smother the wrappers in butter, they’re perfect little vessels for that creamy-spicy goodness we associate with Game Day. And their angular forms lend unexpected elegance to an afternoon of sitting on the couch to experience vicarious athleticism.

Ingredients:

A couple of Jalapeño Popper Wonton cups over a white paper, with sliced jalapeños visible in the background.

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush wonton wrappers on both sides with melted butter and arrange in a mini muffin tin, making sure the edges of the wonton wrappers are facing outwards (not collapsing in on the muffin tin wells). Bake 7 minutes.
  2. Combine cream cheese, jalapeños, green onions, 3/4 cup of cheddar and all the mozzarella cheese in a medium bowl. Stir until thoroughly combined.
  3. Remove par-baked wontons from the oven and allow to cool for 2 minutes. Fill each wonton cup with the cream cheese mixture. Then top with remaining cheddar cheese.
  4. Bake jalapeño popper wonton bites for 12-14 minutes more or until cheese is melted and wonton is golden brown and crisp.
  5. Serve warm.

Note:

Leftover jalapeño popper wonton bites can be individually frozen on a sheet tray then transferred to a zip-top freezer bag. To reheat, place poppers in an oven or air fryer at 350 degrees and bake until melty and crisp.
