Making a Difference in the Lives of Future Leaders
I’m often reminded of an important lesson: Never underestimate the difference you can make in someone’s life.
This reminder came in the form of a letter from Kaylene Khosla, a Fuel Up To Play 60 (FUTP 60) Student Ambassador who participated as a leader at the FUTP 60 Student Ambassador Summit four years in a row.
“Through all the times I have gotten to watch, listen and interact with you, I’ve learned a new lesson,” she wrote.
Her note reminded me of how important it is to set a good example – to walk the walk, pass the baton on to young people and to inspire them to do the same.
It has been such an honor to know and work with Kaylene over the years. If I was a mentor to her, she was one for me as well. Through FUTP 60, I saw her learn and share her knowledge about nutrition, wellness and physical activity with her peers and other students at all levels. But most of all, I’ve seen her grow as a leader.
The FUTP 60 program empowers young people to learn the value of physical activity and good nutrition and to mentor their peers. In the process, they can learn valuable leadership skills they can transfer to future careers.
Watch this video of Kaylene’s 2015 graduation from the FUTP 60 Youth Council and see Youth Council members John, Noah, Saria and Rylie, who graduated this year. When you hear first-hand from the students and their advisors, you can feel their enthusiasm for the program and you might just be inspired to get involved!
The 2017-2018 school year will be starting soon. Here are some ways you can help impact the lives of students through FUTP 60. Teachers, school nutrition specialists and other staff at a FUTP 60 school can become Program Advisors; parents or other interested adults can volunteer.
Get involved with tomorrow’s leaders – it is so rewarding! And don’t forget to send a letter to those who have been a positive influence on your life – it can mean so much!
